





Defending champions, Yang Zi and Wang Yue Gu retained their Mixed Doubles title at the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow on Sunday 24th May 2009 beating top seeds, Gao Ning and Sun Bei Bei in four games at the final hurdle.
Seeded two; Yang Zi and Sun Bei Bei won 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10.
The combination of the left handed Yang Zi and the right handed Wang Yue Gu, the classic doubles partnership, proved an irresistible force.
A semi-final place booked one day earlier, they beat India’s Amalraj Aputhraj Anthony and Madhurika Patkar to reserve their place in the gold medal contest, recovering from an opening game deficit to record a four games success.
Meanwhile, at the same stage, Gao Ning and Sun Bei Bei defeated Australia’s William Henzell and Miao Miao.
The Singaporeans were dominant, never seriously threatened.
More Success
Success for Singapore in the Mixed Doubles and there was also success in both the Men’s and Women’s Doubles events.
In the Men’s Doubles event Gao Ning and Yang Zi defeated Chai Kian Beng and Muhammed Shakirin Ibrahim at the quarter-final stage and meet England’s Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight in the semi-finals; the Englishmen having won a gruelling last eight duel against Australia’s William Henzell and Kiet Song Tran.
Wins for India and Wales
A quarter-final win for Gao Ning and Yang Zi but that was not the case for their colleagues, Cai Xiao Li and Pang Xue Jie, they suffered defeat at the hands of second seeds, India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta and Subhajit Saha.
The Indians meet Ryan Jenkins and Adam Robertson of Wales, the no.4 seeds and 2004 Men’s Doubles champions, in the semi-finals. In the round of the last eight, the Welshmen defeated England’s Andrew Rushton and Danny Reed.
Australia and Canada Join Party
Successful in the Men’s Doubles for Singapore, England, Wales and India; whilst in the Women’s Doubles event Singapore and England also enjoyed success, with Australia and Canada joining the party.
Top seeds, Singapore’s Sun Bei Bei and Yu Meng Yu defeated India’s Mouma Das and Poulomi Ghatak in the quarter-finals whilst second seeds, Canada’s Sara Yuen and Zhang Mo, also ended Indian hopes at the same stage.
They beat Neha Aggarwal and Shamini Kumaresan.
Victories for Next in Line
Wins for the top two seeded pairs and there were also wins for the next in line.
Third seeds, Australia’s Miao Miao and Stephanie Xu ousted Malaysia’s Beh Lee Wei and Ng Sock Khim; whilst England’s fourth seeded partnership of Joanna Parker and Kelly Sibley ended the hopes of Singapore’s teenage defensive pairing of Isabelle Li and Zena Sim.
Semi-Finals
In the semi-finals, Sun Bei Bei and Yu Meng Yu meet Miao Miao and Stephanie Xu whilst Sara Yuen and Zhang Mo confront Joanna Parker and Kelly Sibley.
